D-Day Portraits Gallery
Commissioned by the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia, the seven busts commemorate the influential leaders of the Allied nations during World War II: Clement Attlee, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Chiang Kai-shek, Joseph Stalin, and Harry Truman.
Each portrait is sculpted 20% larger than life, capturing the presence and authority of these historical figures.

JOSEF STALIN & CHARLES deGAUL @ the Artist’s Studio

Created as part of a permanent memorial to honor the “valor, fidelity and sacrifice” of the Allied forces of WWII, these busts represent a moment in history when global collaboration and resolve changed the course of the war. Richard’s attention to detail and his ability to convey each leader’s personality make these sculptures powerful symbols of strength, resilience, and unity.
The inclusion of controversial allies sparked debate and garnered media attention, making those sculptures both artistically and historically compelling.
“Churchill was perhaps the hardest to start with, to sculpt as the first Allied leader, because everyone thinks they know what Churchill looked like (My job was something like being a minister when everyone in the Congregation thinks they may know the Bible!).”
–R. P.
Regarding the first two Allied Leaders’ portraits sculpted for the Memorial, Churchill and Roosevelt, the then-Day Memorial Foundation President William A. McIntosh said, “This sculptor animates his subjects, epic figures both, with a commanding mixture of energy, ferocity, and resolve that richly complements the other statuary at the Memorial.”
Richard’s D-Day portraits have been featured in various media outlets while a few sparked debate. Check out these links to read about the media buzz surrounding the memorial: Washington Times and The News & Advance.
