Richard Pumphrey’s portrait sculptures go beyond capturing a physical likeness—they aim to reflect the essence and legacy of each individual. His works include busts made for prestigious institutions, such as the National D-Day Memorial in Virginia, a life-size bust of Thomas Jefferson, installed at the President’s historic Poplar Forest residence,
and most recently at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. Richard’s portfolio also includes delicate portrait busts of children, each capturing the innocence and unique personality of the subject.

Richard’s approach to portraiture is both comprehensive and thoughtful. Each project begins with a consultation to understand the subject’s story and the client’s vision.

Typically, photographs are used in the creation of a portrait bust when the subject is an adult or child, living or deceased. Existing photos of the subject from various angles, ages, and of a variety of expressions, are used to capture the subject’s character.

If preferred, photographs used specifically for the purpose of the sculpting can be taken or directed by the artist. They can also be sourced from family albums, yearbooks, print media, and elsewhere to ensure an accurate likeness. Portrait busts of a subject at almost any age can be created, provided adequate photographs are available. This allows clients to commemorate their subject at a particular time in their life.

“I ensure that every sculpture is a faithful and expressive representation, reflecting the uniqueness of the individual.”
